Photography and Videography with Drones
April 15, 2024
Taking good photos with a drone can be very challenging. There are many factors you need to take into account before you can master the art of aerial photography or videography with a drone. The time of day, the weather and of course your choice of drone and camera can all affect the quality of your photos. For a beginner it can be very difficult to know where to start but here are a couple of pointers:
1 Use first person view. The use of FPV makes it so much easier to get great shots, whether it is for photography or videography.
2 Check the weather first. Avoid windy conditions as they make the drone shake, a gimbal helps but does not eliminate the shakes in heavy wind.
3 Shoot from a high altitude. Sometimes getting high up makes all the difference in the world, and you get more objects into the shot. Use your ability to get vertical distance.
Drones that follow you
If you are into action sports you might have seen the actions videos where the camera follows a surfboard, a skier or someone on a skateboard. This is done via the follow me function. Using drones that follow you is a great way to get action footage that is very unique looking, and super cool to watch. You can use a GoPro drone for this too, and you can get more info on that here.
Regardless of the purpose, video or camera, make sure to use a good camera. A drone with GoPro is a great choice as GoPro has real quality cameras, which offers a better quality than the knockoffs. The newer drones, like the DJI Phantom 3 and the DJI Phantom 4 also have amazing cameras that gets great photos.
